International Dot Day Spotlight: #ARTROCKZ

The Dot Day Team loves connecting the dots with educators across the globe. For this spotlight, we connected with Sonjia Pelton-Sam a teacher at the J.C. Mitchell Elementary in Houston, Texas to learn about #ARTROCKZ and her Dot Day project!  Read on to learn more!

Hello, my name is Sonjia Pelton-Sam also known as the #ARTROCKZ teacher at J.C. Mitchell Elementary in Houston, Texas. I am an elementary art teacher that teaches Pre-K- 5th grade. I love art and all things creative. I am a wife, a mom of 2, and a grandmother of 2.

Something fun about me is I love doing graphic designs and creating workbooks and journals.  In the last few years, I have experienced loss from Hurricane Harvey. I lost my car and my classroom, it was horrible. A lot of my students lost everything. We were blessed with a new building that is now 2 years old.

I had a battle with breast cancer and I won. I was off work for a whole year, going through chemo, radiation, surgery, and chemo again. I am now a little over 1-year cancer free and back in the classroom teaching my amazing students in my brand new classroom.

Shout out to my Principal Dr. Elizabeth Castillo-Guajardo

Bonus: Sonjia Pelton-Sam runs the FREE Facebook Group: Art Teacher ARTROCKZ SHARE Lab, where art teachers can talk about art and share tips to help students create. As a special Dot Day deal, Sonjia Pelton-Sam has a fun Dot Day project in the group. She says this project is good for “Dot Day, or any day you want to bring Dot Day back to life throughout the year. You can teach symmetry, math, mandalas, or just let the students be creative and have fun. The projects are endless when using dots.”
