International Dot Day at International School of Nanshan Shenzhen
On September 15, students at the International School of Nanshan Shenzhen celebrated International Dot Day, a global event that encourages students to be risk-takers, open-minded learners, and reflective artists. The day highlights the importance of trying new things, even when it feels uncertain.
From K2 to Grade 5, students participated in both Creative Arts and Visual Arts classes, where they explored drawing and painting circles in a variety of individual and collaborative artworks. Continuing our yearly tradition, classes also read The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.
In the story, a young girl named Vashti begins her creative journey with a single dot after some gentle encouragement from her teacher. She eventually becomes more confident, reflective, and open to artistic risk-taking—ultimately inspiring others to “make their mark” too.
Throughout the day, students embraced the spirit of creativity and exploration. They learned that it's okay to make mistakes, to try something new, and to keep growing through the process of making art.
We also explored the work of inspirational artists who are known for their use of dots and circles, including:
· Yayoi Kusama
· Alma Thomas
· Wassily Kandinsky
· Georges Seurat
Students created joyful collaborative projects full of color and personality. The experience not only celebrated art but also reinforced the values of courage, curiosity, and creative expression—all while having fun!!
