We Are Better Together: Celebrating International Dot Day at BASIS International School Wuhan

At BASIS International School Wuhan, September is a joyful time of creativity and connection. For the third year in a row, we have celebrated International Dot Day, a global commemoration of courage, creativity, and collaboration. This year’s theme, “We Are Better Together,” reflected perfectly the spirit of our growing school community.

Our celebration began with Peter H. Reynolds’ beloved book The Dot. The story of Vashti—who transforms self-doubt into creative confidence—never fails to fill our classrooms with laughter, anticipation, and inspiration. After reading the story, students added their own sticky-note reflections, sharing how The Dot inspired them to be brave, creative, and proud of their work.

Grades 1–4 then brought the theme to life by creating concentric circles—shapes that share a common center. Each student’s design was cut into four pieces and rearranged, symbolizing how our individual efforts come together to form something greater. The final collaborative artwork, now displayed in our hallway, bursts with color and unity—a joyful reminder that we truly are better together.

Taking the celebration even further, our fourth graders visited our preschool building to share bright yellow “dots of encouragement” with younger artists. Their kind words and compliments captured the heart of Dot Day: creativity grows strongest when shared. What a beautiful way to begin a new school year—supporting one another as we all continue to “make our mark!”
